GTA 6 is coming, and PC gamers are already asking the obvious question: will my current gaming PC actually be able to run it? The confusion comes from the large number of predicted “GTA 6 PC requirements” being published as though Rockstar had confirmed them.
It has not.
As of 17 August 2026, Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to launch on 19 November 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar has not announced a PC release date or official PC system requirements.
This guide will help you identify the component most likely to hold your PC back and decide whether you should keep it, upgrade it, replace it or wait.

That is the only uncertainty we need to establish. From here, the useful question is not “What are Rockstar’s requirements?” but:
What hardware would I recommend for a demanding modern open-world game in 2026?
That question can be answered.
Why You Shouldn’t Buy a PC Based on a Rumoured Specification

Unofficial specifications are generally assembled from current AAA games, console hardware, trailers, rumours and assumptions about Rockstar’s engine. They can help frame a discussion, but they cannot tell us that GTA 6 will require one specific processor or graphics card.
Building a £1,500 or £2,000 PC around an unverified requirements table is the wrong way to buy hardware.
The better test is simple:
Would this be a well-balanced gaming PC for demanding AAA games even if GTA 6 did not exist?
If the answer is yes, you are buying a useful system rather than gambling on a prediction.
That leaves the real job: judge the PC you already own by how it behaves in demanding games. Resolution determines how hard the GPU must work, frame-time behaviour helps expose a CPU limitation, and the age of the platform determines whether an upgrade is sensible. Those are the decisions that matter—not whether your parts match somebody’s invented specification.
Before You Compare Specs, Understand What Actually Matters

GPU and VRAM — Your Main Graphics Limit
The graphics card will usually determine your resolution, visual settings and achievable frame rate. VRAM determines how much texture, frame-buffer and rendering data the card can keep locally while doing that work.
For a new 2026 build, I would think about GPUs in three practical groups:

1080p and sensible 1440p: RX 9060 XT 16GB or RTX 5060 Ti 16GB class.

Strong 1440p and usable 4K: RX 9070, RX 9070 XT or RTX 5070 Ti class.

High-end 4K: RTX 5080 class.
That distinction matters. A slow 16GB card can still lose comfortably to a much faster 12GB card. GPU speed and GPU memory capacity are separate specifications.
My buying position is straightforward:

8GB: acceptable for an existing 1080p card, but difficult to recommend in a costly new AAA-focused PC.

12GB: workable for strong 1080p and 1440p gaming.

16GB: the capacity I would choose for a serious new 1440p or 4K-oriented system.
I would not replace a good 12GB GPU purely for 16GB, but I would choose 16GB when similarly performing new cards are similarly priced.
Upgrade the GPU when lowering resolution or graphics settings produces a large improvement and the rest of the PC is still capable. Just make sure the PSU, case clearance and airflow can properly support the new card.
Ray Tracing, Upscaling and Frame Generation
Ray tracing can improve lighting, reflections and shadows, but I would not overspend simply to run every RT setting at maximum. “Ultra” is a preset, not a moral obligation.
Upscaling can be extremely useful at 1440p and especially 4K, while aggressive modes at 1080p can compromise image quality. Frame generation can make motion look smoother, but only when the GPU is already producing a healthy base frame rate. I use it to enhance good performance, not to disguise weak hardware.
CPU and Cache — The Source of Busy-Scene Slowdowns
A large open-world game can lean heavily on the CPU, particularly for simulation, AI and draw calls. Uneven frame times and poor minimums that barely improve when you lower resolution or graphics settings are strong signs of a CPU bottleneck.
For a new build, I would choose a modern six-core for mainstream gaming, eight-core for a stronger long-term system, or an X3D-class CPU for high-refresh gaming with a powerful GPU.
AMD’s 3D V-Cache processors can be particularly strong because their larger cache keeps more game data close to the cores. But I would not sacrifice the GPU tier for an X3D chip: at 4K especially, I would usually put that money into the graphics card first.
For upgrades, an in-socket CPU replacement can be excellent value. If it also requires a new motherboard and RAM, treat it as a platform upgrade and judge the total cost accordingly.
RAM — Capacity and Configuration Matter More Than Bragging Rights
16GB is still usable, but for a new gaming PC I would install 32GB as two matched 16GB modules. It gives the game, Windows and background applications enough headroom without paying for capacity that rarely improves gaming.
For an existing PC, upgrade when memory is regularly near capacity, or the system is running a single 16GB module. I would also favour two DIMMs over four, particularly with faster DDR5 memory, as it is generally easier on the memory controller.
I would not move to 64GB purely for gaming. That money is better spent elsewhere unless the PC also handles memory-heavy workloads.
SSD — Capacity Matters More Than a Flagship Benchmark
For a modern gaming build, SSD capacity matters more than chasing flagship speeds. Once you have a competent NVMe drive, the extra throughput of an expensive PCIe 5.0 model rarely translates into proportionate gaming gains.
I would take a good 2TB PCIe 4.0 SSD over a premium 1TB PCIe 5.0 drive and put the difference towards the GPU or CPU. Microsoft’s DirectStorage makes NVMe storage increasingly relevant to asset streaming, but it does not make benchmark-leading storage good value by default.
So... Is Your Current PC Ready?
A machine built around a reasonably recent six- or eight-core processor, a capable GPU for its resolution, sufficient VRAM, 32GB of dual-channel memory and NVMe storage is in a good position.
As a practical example, a system with a Ryzen 5 5600 or Core i5-12400-class processor or better, paired with an RTX 4070 or RX 7800 XT-class graphics card, is not something I would rush to replace.
It may not run every future setting at maximum, but it is already a capable modern gaming PC.

Replacement starts to make sense when several components need attention at once. An old CPU may require a new motherboard, the motherboard may require new memory, and the GPU may need a stronger PSU and better case airflow.
At that point, you are not carrying out one upgrade. You are rebuilding most of the machine around a few old parts.
Upgrade the bottleneck, not the entire PC. A complete replacement is poor value when one well-chosen component fixes the real problem.
Building a New Gaming PC for GTA 6? Don’t Build One Just for GTA 6
A gaming PC bought in 2026 should be built for demanding AAA gaming, not one unreleased PC game.
Prioritise the GPU and VRAM for your resolution, then a CPU fast enough to support it, 32GB of matched memory, sufficient NVMe storage and a quality PSU with a sensible upgrade path.
I would not divert budget into 64GB of gaming-only RAM, a flagship Gen 5 SSD, an expensive motherboard or unnecessary cooling. Leave room for future upgrades, but pay for performance you can actually use today.

What About Gaming Laptops for GTA 6?
A gaming laptop can handle demanding modern games, but the GPU name tells you less than it does on a desktop.
Laptop performance is shaped by cooling, chassis design and power limits. NVIDIA’s current specifications allow the RTX 5060 Laptop GPU to operate across a 45–100W range, the RTX 5070 Ti across 60–115W and the RTX 5080 across 80–150W. The same range lists 8GB, 12GB and 16GB of VRAM, respectively.
That is a large difference.
A well-cooled, higher-power laptop can outperform a thinner machine carrying a similar GPU badge. This is why I would check the GPU power limit, sustained-performance testing, fan noise and temperatures rather than buying from the product title alone.
VRAM deserves more attention in a laptop because it cannot normally be upgraded. For 1080p or 1200p gaming, 8GB can be workable. For a premium 1600p machine expected to last several years, I would prefer 12GB or 16GB.
I would also target 32GB of RAM and at least 1TB of SSD storage. A 16GB model can still be worthwhile when the memory is upgradeable, and a second M.2 slot is often more valuable than paying a large factory premium for storage.I would buy the recommended tier over a thin “high-end” model with poor cooling. Sustained performance matters more than the badge printed beside the keyboard.
The Bottom Line — What I Actually Recommend
Do not build a PC around internet rumours or replace a good system for hypothetical maximum settings.
If your PC already has a capable modern CPU, strong GPU with enough VRAM, 32GB of memory and NVMe storage, I would keep it and upgrade only the component that becomes a genuine bottleneck.
For a new build, I would put the budget into the GPU and VRAM first, then pair it with a capable CPU, 32GB of matched memory and a good PCIe 4.0 SSD. I would not waste money on 64GB of gaming-only RAM, a flagship SSD, an extravagant motherboard or unnecessary cooling.
Most importantly, leave a sensible route to the next CPU, GPU or storage upgrade without paying for speculative “future-proofing” today.
